Missing Meghana Review: A Crime Thriller That Struggles to Maintain Suspense

Missing Meghana, a Telugu crime mystery thriller directed by debutant Vachaspathy Jonnalagadda, was released in theatres on September 18, 2026. The film stars Ram Karthik, Ammu Abhirami, Ankith Koyya, and Vaidika Senjaliya in lead roles. Reviews from multiple publications describe the film as a routine thriller that offers a few twists but fails to deliver consistent tension.

The story begins when Meghana, a young woman who runs a bakery in Vizag, fails to return home by her 10 PM curfew. Her father, played by Goparaju Ramana, finds her abandoned scooter and bag and files a kidnapping complaint. A local sub-inspector ignores the case, but Meghana’s fiance, ACP Arjun, played by Kaushik, takes over the investigation.

Police interrogate several suspects, including a stalker, a bakery employee, and a local rowdy. The investigation reveals that Meghana had been in contact with a bike rider named Karthik, played by Ram Karthik. Karthik claims he has no connection to her, but his past romance with Meghana and phone records suggest otherwise.

As the case unfolds, multiple murders and a drug angle emerge. The film explores whether Meghana was kidnapped or murdered and what role Karthik and other characters played in her disappearance.

The film features Ram Karthik, Ammu Abhirami, Ankith Koyya, and Vaidika Senjaliya in lead roles. The supporting cast includes Goparaju Ramana, Vempa Kasi, Kaushik, Mahipal, Ruchita, and Nalini. Vachaspathy Jonnalagadda directed the film, with Panchumarthi Naresh Babu producing under the First Copy Movies and KD & Co banners. Vanaraj handled the story and screenplay, while R. R. Dhruvan composed the music and Sam K. Naidu served as cinematographer.

Reviews for Missing Meghana have been mixed, with most critics noting the film’s familiar premise and predictable execution. Asianet Newsable rated the film 2.75 out of 5, stating that the first half moves quickly but the second half feels lengthy due to an extended love track.

Cinejosh gave the film a 1.25 rating, calling it a run-of-the-mill crime thriller with predictable elements and a weak villain. 123telugu.com rated it 2.5 out of 5, noting that while the first half is engaging, the second half becomes prolonged and the identity of the villain is easy to guess.

The Hans India offered a more positive review with a 3 out of 5 rating, describing the film as an entertaining crime thriller that gradually builds complexity as the investigation proceeds.

Critics highlighted the performances of the cast. Ram Karthik was noted for a settled performance as a man dealing with love failure. Ankith Koyya’s character twist was praised as a major highlight. Ammu Abhirami was described as fitting well into Meghana’s character and holding attention effectively.

On the technical side, R. R. Dhruvan’s music was seen as a strength by some reviewers, with melody songs working well. However, 123telugu noted that the background score often gives the film an outdated feel and does not build enough tension for a thriller.

Sam K. Naidu’s cinematography received praise for appealing visuals, though some scenes suffered from poor color grading. Editing was criticized for dragging, particularly in the second half, with prolonged sequences creating a noticeable lag.

Missing Meghana was released in approximately 150 theatres across Telugu-speaking regions. According to Sacnilk, the film collected approximately Rs 0.10 crore gross at the box office on its opening day. The film had not secured an OTT release at the time of its theatrical debut.

Director Vachaspathy Jonnalagadda spent nearly 17 years working in various departments of the film industry before making his directorial debut with Missing Meghana. He previously worked as a co-director on Climax and as an assistant co-director on Tantra.

Vachaspathy said the idea for the film came from his own travels. He stated: ‘A girl meets a guy on a ride. They have a fight and leave. Later, the girl goes missing, and the guy becomes the last point of contact with her. He is arrested, and that’s how the story begins.’

The director also expressed confidence in the project before release, stating: ‘While many thrillers hit the screen regularly, Missing Meghana will truly surprise the audience. We haven’t made a film that comes and goes without an impact—we have invested two years of our effort and budget into this project. The hook point in the climax will leave everyone shocked. This is not just a standard thriller; it is an emotional thriller.’

Despite the director’s confidence, critical consensus suggests that the film struggles to maintain suspense throughout. Many reviewers noted that the villain’s identity becomes apparent before the climax, reducing the impact of the final reveal.
